January Sermon Series

“Called by God”

What can I do when I feel called by God to do something?

Do you remember the last time you got called by the State for jury duty?  Was your reaction one of utter joy and excitement at the prospect of serving on a panel of your piers while lawyers argued their case?  Or did you come up with some excuses to share with the judge?  Being called in for jury duty is not normally on our bucket lists, but it is something we have to respond to.  It is has been a while since I have received notice to serve and so I have to be careful as to what I say here.  Let me talk about a different call that many of us have received in our lives.  It is the call of God to do something.  Maybe we felt called to do something about the starving children in Ethiopia or the tornado victims in Illinois.  Maybe we felt called by God to do something about the teaching position that is open during the Sunday school hour.  This sermon series addresses how we respond to that call.  We will look at four passages in the Old Testament that give us snapshots into the life of David as he responded to the call of God to do something.  Here is a look at these four messages:

January 5th       Title: Accept It                        Text: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

Theme: We need to understand that God does call us for a reason

January 12th     Title: Stand Tall                      Text: 1 Samuel 17:41-50

Theme: We need to stand tall when doing what God has called us to do

January 19th     Title: Expect Hardships          Text: 1 Samuel 18:1-12

Theme: We need to realize that there may be difficult moments when serving the Lord

January 26th     Title: Follow Through             Text: 1 Kings 2:1-4

Theme: We need to remain faithful to the finish in our serving the Lord
